After a beautifully observed silence to mark Armistices Day, the game sparked into action soon after. A large crowd were keen to see a consistent COCKLES performance and that is exactly what the team delivered. Securing a bonus point win 43-18, the score could have been higher.
Our forward pack matched their larger counterparts extremely well, always a fearsome challenge from a Weston team. Within three minutes Matty Ryan scored the first of a hat trick of tries, three minutes later George Nuttycombe got three points back from a penalty, 5-3. Both teams looked to secure the ball and attack, both teams traded yellow cards for technical offences. Skipper Dave Bargent crashed over from a stable scrum close to the line, extras from Gareth, who kicked thirteen points through out the afternoon. The clock ticked to 25 minutes, 12-3. Jake Inglis scored a super individual try with tricky running to stretch the COCKLES lead, made better by a lovely touchline conversion from Gareth, 19-6 following another penalty, brought the first half to a close.
The second period scoring stated quicker than the first, Oli Cave crashed through the visitors defence, two minutes after the restart, Gareth obliged with conversion, then a penalty soon after, 29-6, try bonus point secured. Weston scored the first of their final two tries from Wes Hayden Main, Josh Mynett added the other late on with Nuttycombe adding a conversion. With ball in hand, the COCKLES back line took advantage to tease the Weston defence, Lewis Geran, James Clarke with Nick Headley were a constant threat. Matty scored two fine tries in the final sixteen minutes to complete his hat trick, the latter a sniping dive after some lovely rolling play from the forwards. Both tries converted, we closed the game out 43-18 winners.
‘That’s Entertainment’, ringing from the sound system after the game, perfectly summed up the afternoon for the viewers at Our House.
