The COCKLES didn’t travel well into Gloucester and came away empty handed from a game they could have got more out of. A strong line-up did dominate for large parts of the first half however they also had to defend long periods. A solitary try on 18 minutes from Robbie Weeks, gathered from a neat offload, converted by George Meadows was the highpoint of a frustrating first 40 minutes. Old Cents added two penalties, we headed into half time 6-7 up.
Tough to give an exact singular reason for a second period capitulation, especially as George Meadows added two long range penalties to increase our lead. Old Cents wrapped up a bonus point win as the game closed out, 30-13. Despite the recent work-ons, the same frailties emerged, losing the ball in contact, handling errors, needless penalties, a yellow card, interpretation & playing to the referee. The good news is that they are all recoverable and the lads know it. Debuts for Charlie Garratt at hooker and Ben Mellor on to the wing ensured we continue to develop our lads who have come through our junior ranks through to senior teams. 9 players on the pitch started their rugby at with Exmouth Juniors.
The COCKLES go to a Devon Cup game at Sidmouth on Saturday 8th October. The first of 3 pool games, the next in April 2023. The next League game is Brixham at home on Saturday 15th October, kick off @ 2.30 pm
