COCKLES did get a bonus point from this outing, it was so close to more. The game just slipped away on the trip to North Devon.
This league is notable for 12 tough teams, games are decided on fine margins, especially at the top. Just four points cover the top 4 places. Losing out 26-22 to top of the table Barnstaple, the COCKLES pushed their hosts all the way. Both teams were close throughout the eighty minutes, although the North Devon outfit led at the break 14-3, a solitary penalty for George Meadows.
Playing with the slight slope, with breeze in the second period, Exmouth fought back to take the lead 14-17 at one stage. Scores from Bryn Edwards, Charlie Gibbings and Nick Headley with two conversions from Meads were not enough to steal the win on the road. A fine team performance, however, the game slipped away, the COCKLES could not get the ball back to close the gap in the final minutes.
On to the visit of Brixham next Saturday 11th February, KO at 2.00pm. Our lads take on the side in second place, The Fisherman always bring a robust style of play, the home side will need to be at their best to find their next win. COCKLES QUINS entertained OPM from Plymouth, taking the win 29-20, in a great game for the neutral spectator. Two tries a piece for Charlie Passmore and Eddie Hooper, with nine points from the boot of Nick Eveleigh, gave the hosts a bonus point victory. When the lad realised they had the pace to attack a larger side, the game changed, after OPM took the lead. A fine team performance from the boys. NOMADS had a tough encounter in Barnstaple, losing out 69-7, to a bigger, more experienced line up. Next up, on Saturday 11th January, QUINS travel to Plymouth Argaum and COLTS re start the year with a home game against Topsham. On Sunday 12th January EXMOUTH RUGBY WOMEN travel up the M5 to Taunton.
