Game 1: Exmouth 20 - 5 Honiton
Game 2: Exmouth 60 - 30 Honiton
It was a real pleasure to have a visiting team with a large squad, ensuring everyone got the chance to compete against worthy opponents. The first game saw Exmouth finally get to grips with rucking, and this paid dividends in what was an extremely physical and closely fought battle between two well drilled teams. Zach Higgingson got the first points on the board after what seemed an age, this game being too close to call. Honiton then piled on relentless pressure just short of the line, however Exmouth resolutely battled to keep them out. A Honiton well worked backs try got them even at the break.
With the wind now behind them Exmouth clicked and started firing on all cylinders. Rucking, mualing, passing and some good set pieces from penalty restarts made them a pleasure to watch. Ollie Toomey showed his class by picking up two consecutive tries, the first finishing of good team play, the second his awareness at the base of the ruck. Attacking once more, Sam Fulthorpe caught in the tackle lofted a pass out to the wing for Hugo Flinn to catch and dive over in one fluid movement putting the game to bed. Exmouth victorious 20-5
The second game by contrast was an absolute try fest in which Exmouth were worthy winners. Ieuan Kidd picked up his first of four tries, showing great awareness to get the Cockles on the score sheet. Next up was Jake Ford saw his opportunity and grabbed it. Joseph Stevens scored next for Exmouth and it was looking like they were heading for a whitewash when Honiton eventually settled down and started to compete. Tit for tat scores, Tom Cooke then Honiton, as Cooke began collecting the first of his haul of six tries. Confidence on the up, Exmouth began to play some good open running rugby and as Kidd grabbed a brace near the end Cooke put the icing on the cake with one last try before the whistle. By far the best effort this team has displayed so far this season. Exmouth winners 60-30.
