This was a truly monumental squad effort and a pleasure to watch as all three games were riveting entertainment. From the onset Exmouth took control of the game and allowed Sarries little time or indeed options. The contact area was totally dominated by Exmouth. Great forward work, secured ball for the backs and tries came from all over the park. The first try, straight off the training ground, was perhaps try of the day. Tap and pass, into contact, support then driving over, scrum half pass, clean hands through to the winger and over in the corner. It really doesn’t get any better.
From there on, they really put Sarries under pressure. From each restart Exmouth muscled their way into gaining possession, and then confidently, held onto the ball, worked the phases and ground out a score. The structure of all the sides was excellent, not having a coach on the park to shepherd them meant they would have to rely on each other to keep their shape. They did so brilliantly as young leaders are emerging and starting to voice themselves.
Sarries were totally blown away by Exmouth’s game and through frustration started to make mistakes. Offsides were abundant, hands in the rucks were constant and one young Saracen persistently tripped up the Exmouth attack. In light of all this, Exmouth showed true character and played the game to the letter. Not getting drawn in and staying focused was true testament to the maturity of this squad. Everyone seemed happy in the contact area and very few tackles were missed. A great start to the season. Try scorers were Will Tidball, Morgan Wright (2), Ollie Toomey (4), Sam Fulthorpe (3), Zach Higginson and Josh Wibberley.
