Exmouth Cockles under 8 squad continued their excellent performance with a fully committed squad against Torquay.
The first match saw newcomer Ben Dawson score two tries in the first half. Dawson was joined on the score sheet by James McOwan and Cameron Bennett and a great try from Ollie Jones who picked up the ball from a Stewart Masters pass and ran straight through the Torquay centre.
The second half again saw tries from Cameron Bennett who continued to notch up his tally of tries. James McOwan and Max Handford also added their names to the score sheet with Arron Lee picking up bonus points.
The end-to-end match which saw some closely called decisions eventually ended with Exmouth winning 14 tries to 13 over their hosts. The Exmouth side were well disciplined throughout the game which was won by strong challenges, excellent passing and a great team spirit.
A change in players for both teams led to an equally challenging second match with Torquay pushing their way through the Exmouth defence during the first half.
An inspired Exmouth fought back in the second half with the whole team firing on 4 cylinders. Great-determined play was shown by Luke Davis and Eddie Ford showed true grit by making a fantastic run – head down charging through the Torquay defence to score. Ford picked up a second try and the final quarter of the match saw Exmouth repeatedly break the Torquay defence with Owen Tidball, Ollie Jones, Jack Crowhurst and Callum Wilmott adding their names to the Exmouth score sheet.
As usual, Harry Sprague and Alec Dunstan were solid in the Exmouth defence. The final score for the second match was 10 tries to 8 in Torquay’s favour.
Exmouth should be proud of their outstanding play, continued improved performance and dedication shown by the coaching squad. The rest of the season looks promising!
