Game 1: Exeter Chiefs 60 - 45 Exmouth
Game 2: Exeter Chiefs 15 - 15 Exmouth
A change of schedule meant that Exmouth Cockles under 8 squad travelled to Exeter Chiefs for their latest fixture.
The size and strength of the Exmouth squad meant that two matches were played in what proved to be an extremely close contest.
The first match saw Stewart Masters and James McOwan pick up a hat trick of tries apiece for Exmouth with McOwan’s final try being set up from Harry Sprague who ran through the Chief’s defensive line to pass the ball to McOwan.
The Exmouth side moved the ball wide on many occasions and Eddie Ford, Owen Tidball and Alec Dunstan picked up additional tries for Exmouth. The first match finished 9 tries to 12 with the Chiefs winning by a whisker.
The second match saw a change of players for both sides. Ollie Jones ran half of the pitch and made a superb pass to Toby McCowaghy who scored by side- stepping and zig – zagging through the Chief’s defence.
Max Handford also scored 2 tries for the young cockles by determined running through the Chiefs line.
With the game poised at 3 tries all, the Chiefs looked set to score again in the final minute. Exmouth were saved by Ollie Jones who ran across the full width of the pitch and put in a tremendous defensive tag to prevent the chiefs from scoring.
The final whistle blew with the score being 3 tries each; which was a fair result given the tremendous effort put in by both teams.
Exmouth can now look forward to entertaining Okehampton at home next week in what is bound to be another closely fought contest.
