Tiverton 0 - 48 Exmouth
Faced with the customary wind and rain which seems to welcome all sportsmen to Tiverton the young cockles maintained their progress in the new season with a convincing win of 48 nil against Tiverton U’15’s.
With several players being unavailable it gave the coaching team the opportunity to play and try different players in different positions which proved very effective.
With the first ten minutes being fairly even it was a break by scrum half Lloyd Watkins feeding Danny Sansom that led to Ryan Poulter crashing over the line for the first try of the day. The conversion was missed. It was Poulter who scored his second try minutes later with another short drive over the line following fine work by the forwards, in particular, Sonny Wright and Frank Reed.
A break through the centre by Mark Woolley brought a ruck under the posts, Watkins supplied Sansom at Fly Half who switched passed with his inside centre Simon Hartery who returned the compliment by scoring near the posts. James England converting. Virtually straight from the restart the ball was played back into the Tiverton 22 – Danny Sansom completing the first half try scoring spree with a fine individual effort. The conversion was completed leaving the score at 24 nil at half time.
The second half started a ‘purple patch’ for no 8 Josh Elliott who scored the next three tries with driving runs from the base of the scrum and ruck – all three tries being set up with hard work from all the forwards, in particular Ben Heys, playing at Hooker and Chris McAdam at Second Row.
As the game started to suffer towards the end due to the weather conditions it was a fine break and subsequent kick through by Simon Hartery which gave Full Back James England the opportunity to score the final try of the game. England completed the conversion to bring the score to 48 nil. Credit must be given to Tiverton who continued to battle throughout the game.
