Group Games:

Exmouth 17 - 15 Teignmouth

Exmouth 34 - 7 Plymstock

Exmouth 62 - 5 Torquay

Semi Final:

Exmouth 12 - 19 Barnstaple

Exmouth went into this 7 a-side tournament with little expectation but acquitted themselves well. From the opening game they were quick to settle and were strong in both attack and defense and when Teignmouth went ahead they did not get flustered and proceeded to gradually dominate the match from the mid point onwards. This was undoubtedly the closest game of the group stage and there was relief when they came in the victors.

There was some good moves among the backs with Tom Steer, Alfie Valentine and Paul Bright linking up well but this does not take away the work of the rest of the team. The forwards played there part and buried themselves to ensure the backs got the ball.

The second game saw them against Plymstock who were convincing against Torquay so Exmouth started strongly to ensure they took hold of the game and they were by far the better team. A 7s side is a completely different game to 15 a-side demanding more stamina and less reliance on set play. The forwards contained the two Wills, French and House, Dom Roberts as hooker with Seb Opie also taking his place in the forwards and even as hooker. Ben Holloway was brought on to add strength when needed and Lewis Turner was on fine form in loose play using his strength and speed to good effect.

Jack Stuart was on hand to lend experience and strength as well as the ever present Ed Wright who delivered an opportunist try in the first game out of nothing.

The second game was a well deserved victory for Exmouth and the need to ensure they beat Torquay to top the table and go into the semi final was demonstrated by one of the finest displays of rugby they have ever put on.

They were deserved semi finalists and came up against a strong Barnstaple side who were quick on the score board but Exmouth came back and were 12-7 up with only a few minutes to play when they gave away first one try and then a long run from Barnstaple who out ran the heroic efforts of Paul Bright.

It was disappointing to lose in the last piece of play but they all enjoyed the day and are looking forward to next year with much more confidence.
