Exmouth 29 - 0 Exeter Chiefs
Disciplined and well motivated forwards coupled with speed and accuracy of the backs gave the Cockles an emphatic victory over a dogged Exeter Chiefs side.
A deep drop kick from Fly Half Bradley Nielsen at the start immediately put the Cockles in the ascendency. After a series of well worked phases the energy and strength of the forwards picking and driving from the ruck eventually resulted in a well deserved first try, when Josh Elliot crossed the line. Bradley Nielsen Converted.
The Cockles maintained the momentum and again used the phases of play well to move towards the Chief’s line. After being held 10mts from the try line by a determined Chief’s pack eventually patience paid off with a well worked push to the line by Aaron Conway, scoring the second try. A third try quickly followed with a now trade mark run from Simon Hartery who received the ball from some slick passing from the from fringes of the ruck and embarked on his weaving and bludgeoning run to go over the line.
To the Chiefs credit they came out after half time and took the game to the Cockles. Now slightly on the back foot and 10mtrs from their own line the training and confidence came to the fore. After a well earned turn over, the ball was quickly moved out through the half backs to the three quarters and with rapid and accurate passing the team were soon back in the Chief’s half. The Cockles had resisted the Chiefs pressure and were now back on the attack with some impressive movement and passing from the breakdown out to the centres who continued to punch through and find the gaps. Two tries resulted from the constant pressure from Simon Hartery and in the last minute Jamie Maynard; which was converted by Bradley Nielsen.
An extremely impressive offensive and defensive performance by the whole squad against a well drilled and tenacious Chiefs side.
