Tiverton 0 - 32 Exmouth
This League is throwing up some interesting results. Tiverton recently beat Okehampton and Barnstaple and were on a six match unbeaten run. Exmouth were beaten convincingly by Okehampton and narrowly last week by Barnstaple. On paper this was going to be a difficult game for the visitors to win. Although Exmouth had much of the possession it was still nil - nil after 25 minutes, when skipper Joe Parkin turned over ball on his own 22 and raced 50 metres before chipping ahead for Glen Layton to chase and touchdown.
Minutes later the Exmouth backs showed pace and skill to get within 5 metres of the Tivvy try line, from the resulting ruck Parkin executed a cheeky inside ball to Ty Tuckett, running an excellent line to crash over and make the half time score 10- nil.
Exmouth started the second half as they finished the first. Dan Macleod scythed through the defence chipped ahead and was then prevented from chasing his own kick. Yellow card and penalty saw Parkin dummy right and run left in a huge gap under the posts. Howard Smith converting the score. Exmouth took advantage of the missing centre by switching the ball from one side to the other until the overlap appeared and replacement winger Tim Green touched down for an unconverted try. Tom Steer debuted at full back and showed confidence, pace and skill, which will make him a regular in the squad.
Tiverton upped their game and pressured the Exmouth line on several occasions with Jack Sansom at the fore. With 5 minutes to go Exmouth countered and McLeod burst through the centre, evading three defenders to make the score 32 – nil. Tiverton had much of the final play pressing hard in the visitors 22 but the Exmouth defence held and came away with the spoils.
