Exmouth 0 - 7 North Peverton

Stalemate. The only way to describe the weekend’s late arranged fixture at the Imperial Ground. In wet and blustery conditions it was going to be a tough game for both teams.  At half time the score remained tied at nothing a piece. With Exmouth starting the season well, the visitors proved too strong in the last 15 minutes of the game scoring the only points in the game.

Throughout the first half, Exmouth were dominating possession, territory and all round areas of the match. Good line breaks in attack, lead by fly half Shaun Fayter, and saw the home team showing sparks of brilliance. Strong defence by Dan Macleod and Tim Green in the centres proved a tough nut to crack as the Somerset team were getting nothing out of their moves.

Man of the match Ty Tuckett had an excellent game at open side, providing outstanding cover around the pitch with hard tackling and turning over the away team’s ball. North Peverton showed some glimpse’s of strong attack in the forwards with heavy pressure at rucks, maul and scrums. Tom Caygill had an exceptional day at the lineout winning nearly every throw against the head. At half time the point’s board stayed scoreless and with the second half to come, both teams were going to battle it out even harder, although with Exmouth playing against a strong wind.

The second half was well underway and Exmouth continued with early pressure. Fantastic stepping by Dan Macleod broke through the visitors defence near the line and Tim Green delivered a pass that went forward and denied Exmouth deserved points after dominating the first half. However Exmouth kept at it and good forward play by Matt Kain and the Exmouth pack pushed the home team ever closer. Yet poor discipline by the cockles lead to continued penalties that gave the away team an edge.

North Peverton took the advantage and put together some good phases of play.  The last quarter saw them rooted in the Exmouth 22.  The resolute Exmouth defence held with some determined tackling to keep their line intact. Finally the home team cracked and a try under the posts gave the visitors an easy conversion to win the match 7-0.
