Exmouth 27 - 10 Sidmouth
On Saturday saw Sidmouth second team make the short trip from Sidmouth to the Imperial Ground to take on the Quins in a league match.
Exmouth kicked off and quickly got into their rhythm with flanker John Bird gathering the ball straight from the kick off and sprinted towards the Sidmouth line unfortunately for Exmouth he was a little to quick for his support and the Sidmouth defense recovered just in time to clear their line, this set the pattern for the game for the next thirty minutes or so, with Exmouth playing at pace and Sidmouth defending. Exmouth's first try came after nine minutes when fly half Ed Kirk just sliced his way through the Sidmouth's defensive line to go over the try line under the post Ed converted his own try to put Exmouth in the lead seven points to nil.
The next Exmouth try came just three minutes later when scrum half Neil Hooper took a quick penalty spun the ball out along the three quarter line for John Bird to score with the conversion being missed Exmouth lead had increased to twelve points to nil. The Quins continued to applied the pressure playing some very could fast flowing rugby but it was not until the thirty eight minute of the first half they were able to score their next try, again from from a quick penalty tap and John Bird went over under the posts, Ed Kirk converted to make the score at half time seventeen points to nil in Exmouth's favour.
The second half started with Exmouth continuing to play the game at pace and putting the pressure on Sidmouth, it took just six minutes from the restart for Exmouth to score the next try when from another quick penalty tap by Neil Hooper saw yet again John Bird go over for his third try, twenty two nil to the Quins. Exmouth's last try came from prop forward Paul Flower when he went over the line to finish off a very good power play by the Quins forwards, with the conversion being missed it put the score line twenty seven points to nil to Exmouth.
With Exmouth thinking Sidmouth were dead and buried they took their foot off the pedal which allowed Sidmouth back in the game with two very well taken tries but it was to little to late and Exmouth finished the game winners twenty seven point to ten.
A particular mention has to go to the Exmouth front row of Paul Flower, Jason Smith and man of the match Nick Smith for their gritty performances which allowed the remaining Exmouth forwards to link up with the three quarter line and
play such an expansive game.
