Exmouth 20 - 9 Paignton
Saturday saw Exmouth RFC Quins take on Paignton seconds in the league. It was a game that started well for Exmouth, from the kick off the Exmouth forwards put the pressure on Paignton and came with in meter's of the Paignton line only to stopped by a wayward pass by Exmouth and a relieving kick by a Paignton defender. Unfortunately for Exmouth they were unable to capitalize on the early pressure and after eight minutes, Paignton managed to get the ball into the Exmouth half for the first time only for Exmouth to give away a penalty and Paignton to open the scoring.
It took a further ten minutes for Exmouth to score the first of their three tries when scrum half Matt Ryan took a quick penalty tap on the half way line and ran straight through the Paignton defence to score under the posts, with Ed Kirk adding the conversion the score was seven points to three in Exmouth's favour. With Paignton adding another penalty in the thirty fifth minute the half time score was Exmouth seven Paignton six.
The second half started very similar to the first half, however this time it saw the Quins going over within two minutes of the restart with Matt Ryan scoring his second try of the game twelve, six to Exmouth. Paignton again came back at Exmouth and yet again got another kickable penalty which brought them back into the game twelve, nine to Exmouth.
As the game progressed and player becoming tired, gaps started to appear in both defenses, both sides had scoring opportunities but it was Exmouth that made the brake through when winger Nathan Budd finished off a well worked move to score in the corner, seventeen points to nine to Exmouth, it was Exmouth that had the last scoring opportunity when Ed Kirk converted a penalty on the stroke of full time. Full time score twenty points to nine in Exmouth favour.
A special mention has to go to the young Exmouth front row of Tom Roberts, Tom Rowe and Liam Millman who put in such a big performance that all three were named the men off the match.
