Newton Abbot 3 - 29 Exmouth
Saturday saw the Exmouth RFC Quins side travel to Newton Abbot to take on their second team. With Exmouth lying third in the league and Newton Abbot second, this game could prove decisive to the final league position come the end of the season.
What a start for the Quins! Inside the first minute Exmouth scored their first try, from the kick off Newton Abbot knocked the ball on and the resulting scrummage, scrum half Neil Hooper picked the ball from the base of the scrum and went over the Newton Abbot try line untouched, full back Richard Cadywould stepped up and converted the kick to give Exmouth a very early lead of seven points to nil.
The early try gave the Quins the confidence to attack the Newton Abbot defence from all angles and at every opportunity all this pressure resulted in Newton Abbot conceding a penalty right in front of their posts which Cadywould dually kicked ten nil to Exmouth. Several minutes later with Newton Abbot trying to work their way out of their own half by passing the ball wide Richard Cadywould intercepted a wayward pass and ran in another try under the posts, converting his own try Richard made it seventeen point to nil in Exmouth's favour. With the first half coming to a close Newton Abbot were awarded a penalty which they converted to make the half time score seventeen three to Exmouth.
Newton Abbot kicked off to start the second half, playing down the slope they immediately put the pressure on the Quins defence, and as we have seen this season the Quins defence can be very strong and tenacious and last Saturday was no different, for about fifteen minutes Newton Abbot threw all they had at Exmouth to no avail the Exmouth defence stood fast. Slowly Exmouth eased their way back into the game and made a rare excursion into the Newton Abbot half, where they were awarded a free kick, taken quickly by Neil Hooper the ball was spun across the three quarter line for winger Jack Van-Collier to score in the far right corner, twenty two points to three to Exmouth.
After all their hard work and coming away with nothing the Newton Abbot heads started to drop, Exmouth seized on this opportunity and with some good work by the Exmouth forwards, driving straight through the middle the Newton Abbot defensive line, Richard Cadywould popped up to finish off one of these drives to score the final Exmouth try which again he converted to make the score line twenty nine points to three to Exmouth. With the referee blowing the final whistle several minutes after the last score Exmouth Quins came away from Newton Abbot worthy winners, twenty nine points to three.
